The Mighty 8-Bit Microcontroller

01/11/2023

8-bit MCUs

8-bit MCUs (Microcontrollers) are a type of microcontroller that have an 8-bit data bus. This means that they can process data in 8-bit chunks, which is a relatively small amount of data compared to more modern microcontrollers. Despite their limited processing power, 8-bit MCUs are still widely used in many applications, such as in simple electronic devices, home appliances, and automotive systems. They are often chosen for their low cost, low power consumption, and ease of use. Some popular examples of 8-bit MCUs include the Atmel AVR, Microchip PIC, and the 8051 microcontroller.

8-bit MCUs

Mouser and Microchip have collaborated to create an eBook titled "The Mighty 8-Bit Microcontroller," which showcases the value propositions and use cases for 8-bit MCUs. In automotive applications, 8-bit MCUs are often preferred for vehicle subsystems due to their simplicity and efficiency, which aid in maintaining a compact design. Microchip provides solutions, including select AVR EA MCUs, that are specifically designed for automotive applications and comply with automotive standards.

AVR DD MCUs

The compact design of 8-bit MCUs allows industrial designers to implement a module-based architecture while minimizing costs and system complexity. Microchip provides 8-bit MCUs, such as certain AVR DD MCUs, that are specifically designed to endure harsh industrial environments.

In the medical industry, wearable devices and health trackers are required to have sensors for monitoring biometrics, MCUs for interpreting and communicating sensor data, and wireless communication hardware for transmitting data. Additionally, these devices are often portable and battery-powered, which makes power consumption a crucial factor to consider. In Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) applications, 8-bit MCUs provide a distinctive combination of performance and power efficiency.

PIC16F18x

In the consumer electronics industry, two important factors are product size and affordability. Therefore, the PIC16F18x series of 8-bit MCUs can be an ideal choice due to their simple design and small package size.

Another crucial factor to consider in the consumer electronics industry is battery life, as many consumer devices are portable and rely on batteries. The PIC16F171 series of 8-bit MCUs offer extremely low power consumption without compromising on performance or functionality.
